Top 3 Budget Long Lasting Lip Colors (under Rs 500): Review, Photos, Swatches

Saturday, November 19, 2011
Yes, I am obsessed with 'long-lasting' things :) including in makeup. So here are my picks for the best 3 long lasting lip-colors around Rs 500 ($12).

Pick 1 - Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color
I have reviewed this in detail here. Here are some excerpts. The shade here is 'Candid'.

Product Details
Range of Colors: There are 15 colors available. Mostly nudes and subtle shades and there is one bright pink.

Price: Rs 450 when I bought, but 500 now :(
Quantity: 4.5 ml X 2
With Gloss: Yes
With Applicator: Yes

The Texture: When you apply the color alone, it dries up within a minute. But once you apply the gloss, you would not feel any dryness at all. Infact feels quite creamy and moisturizing.

The Pigmentation: Quite good.

The Finish: Since it has gloss, so it gives a nice shiny and glossy finish to the lips with a little bit of shimmer.

The Staying Power: Yes, it does stay upto 10 hours. In fact in a couple of instances when I did not have anything, it stayed for even a longer time till I removed it. The gloss would wear off first, but the color stays on for a long long time.

Watch Out
After long hours, my lips start flaking and layers of color start coming off. This is after over 8 hours though, but is a bit of a problem.
Also shades are subtle colors, tough to find a bright one.

Pick 2 - Chambor Flowing Lipstick (Stay on Color with Shea Butter)
(The shade here is Innocent Rose)

Product Details
Range of Colors: A wide variety of gorgeous colors
Price: Rs 550
Quantity: 4 ml
With Gloss: No
With Applicator: Comes with a twisted brush (See pictures below)

The Texture: Soft, Creamy yet light on the lips

The Pigmentation: Very Good

The Finish: Since it does not come with a gloss, the finish is creamy and gives a matte look. You can always team it up with a gloss if you wish! I have a bright pink shade. It has a very subtle shimmer too.

The Staying Power: Excellent! Definitely lasts for over 7 hours

Watch Out
It tends to dry the lips without the gloss.

Pick 3 - Maybelline Super Stay Gloss
This was my first experiment with long lasting colors, and it was perfect. Maybelline is my favorite drug store brand since it gives you good quality products in reasonable prices. This lip color delivered what it promised - stayed for super long! I went for a second and then the third one, but that unfortunately had some leakage issues. The replacement that I got from Shoppers Stop also had leakage issues. And I have stayed away from it since then. But I won't mind trying it out once again.

They have a nice range of colors available including pink, nudes etc. Last I checked they were phasing this out and planning to introduce a 24 hr stay lip color. I somehow thought 12 hr was enough :)

Product Details
Range of Colors: There are some nice and bright colors available
Price: Rs 380
Quantity: 4.5 ml each
With Gloss: Yes
With Applicator: Yes

The Texture: Soft, and Creamy but gets a little sticky if you apply too much. You are supposed to apply the  gloss after the color dries up. Only that wait is a bit drying.

The Pigmentation: Very Good

The Finish: Glossy. Makes the lips look fuller.

The Staying Power: Excellent! It usually does not go until you remove it with a cleanser.

Watch Out
None, except the leakage thing mentioned above. It is great value for money.

Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color - Candid: Photos, Swatches, Review

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

My latest addition to my lipstick/ lipcolor collection is the Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color - Candid. I had my eyes on these for a long time and finally got one during the ongoing sale from Pantaloons.

Product Details
Product Range: Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color
Product Description: "Extra Durable Lip Color is a long stay liquid lip colour that is rich in texture. It endures for more than 10 hours after application without feathering, bleeding or smudging. Its non transferable and kiss proof formula not only locks the lip colour but also keeps the lips moisturised and nourished. Available in 15 long-lasting shades, the Extra Durable Lip Color is perfect for all occasions, especially a date!"

Shade: Candid (013)
Range of Colors: There are 15 colors available. Mostly nudes and subtle shades and there is one bright pink.
Price: Rs 450 when I bought, but 500 now :(
Quantity: 4.5 ml X 2
With Gloss: Yes
With Applicator: Yes
Application Instructions
1. Apply a thin layer of lip color
2. Wait until dry and then apply the gloss
3. Remove with an oil based cleanser

Here's my review.
The Color: This is a nude shade with a tinge of pink. It has a slight shimmer as well. I actually wanted something for regular wear at work, basically something in pink. But their pink was a little too bright, so I went for this one instead. When applied, the color shows up well, but if you apply just one coat, it does not show up well.

Here is the swatch.

What I like about Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color
  • It stays on really long
  • No dryness, keeps the lips moisturised
  • Easy to apply with the applicators on both ends
  • Gives the kind of finish that I like: Glossy and full
  • Not sticky like some other glosses
  • Have not experienced any leakage issues like I had first faced with Maybelline. Infact, the caps make a click sound wheich is when you know that they have got locked and you need not worry :)
What I don't quite like about Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color
  • After long hours, my lips start flaking and layers of color start coming off. This is after over 8 hours though but is a bit of a problem
  • They do not have vibrant colors in this collection
  • The actual colors look horribly different from the website, so see a sample before you chose to order from the website.

Recommendation:  This is definitely one of the true long lasting lip colors. I generally like except the flaking part. I also like the fact that it comes with a gloss and does not dry the lips like some of the long lasting colors. I picked up a nude shade this time, however I would like to try out a brighter one.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 (I wish they had not increased their price)

My 'Nudes' Shopping - Colorama Nail Polish, Colorbar Lip Color, TBS Lip Protector

Monday, July 11, 2011
All posters are screaming 'Sale' and hence I couldn't stay without going to the mall at least once. I headed to the South City Mall with my mom and aunt. But it looked like the whole world was already there! In a 5 storeyed parking, we managed to get a slot on the roof, the last one!! But it wasn't such a bad thing, the view was very nice and I got to see the sunset, something that happens everyday and yet escapes our eyes because  either we're watching TV or at working at office or there are just too many buildings in front of the balcony :).

I stepped into the Van Heusen store and as usual, it was crowded and I can never find anything in a crowded shop. I start feeling claustrophobic actually. There was 30% off and a buy 2 get 1 free offer which wasn't bad.

Eventually I thought of checking out the Pantaloons cosmetics offers because the clothes section had to be super-crowded. They had 15% off on most of the brands like Colorbar, Maybeline. Faces etc. Almost every brand had some kind of an offer going on. I focused on the first two because had been thinking of buying a long-lasting lip color for a really long time and was swaying between these two brands. Finally these are what I picked. Hopefully they will not disappoint me. I have not even opened the pack. Will definitely review once I use them.

Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel: Nude - Rs 85 for 8 ml

This is a pinkish nude shade. I generally like Colorama nail enamels because they have a nice range of colors, stay on pretty well and are very easy on the pocket. I don't wear nail polish very often and most of them dry out. So I generally don't go for expensive ones.

Colorbar Extra Durable Lip Color: Candid - Rs 450 for Color and Gloss (4.5 ml each)

This is also a pinkish nude color. It comes with a gloss and is expected to last till you remove it. From the swatches I have a feeling, it will be true. Rest, time will tell :) The review will come soon.

TBS Hemp Lip Protector - Rs 275 for 4.2 gms

Just like I complained of dry and chapped lips, so did my mom. TBS had 3 types of lip protectors sticks besides 9-10 perfumed lip balms. This one is fragrance free and is supposed to be the best for dry, flaky lips.

The Hemp lip protector  is enriched with Community Trade beeswax from Zambia to moisturise and soothe even the driest lips. Rest mommy will tell.

Sunset from the South City Mall Roof, Kolkata
And here comes my inspiration! It's the pinkish nude shade of the sky that made me buy those things :)

Swatched: Colorbar Lipstck/ Lip Color

Monday, May 9, 2011
While my husband was shopping for groceries in the 24X7 store, I quickly explored a few shades of colobar lipsticks (few=3 only). I wanted something long-lasting, so asked for their 'Full Finish Long Wear Lipstick' range. They have pretty and matte shades in this range and the SA claimed that these would stay upto 6 hours. She also suggested that the range that lasted even longer is the 'Extra Durable Lip Colour' range (which looked exactly like the Maybelline Super Stay Gloss with a doe foot applicator on one end and a gloss brush on the other). She claimed that they stay for 14 hrs! Here are the swatches. I was looking for a coral to red shades.

1. Long Wear Lipstick (Tempt Me) - Rs 550
2. Long Wear Lipstick (Get Ready) - Rs 550
3. Extra durable Lip Color (Fashion Fushia I think, not a 100% sure) - Rs 450

The Packaging
Full Finish Long Wear Lipstick
Extra Durable Lip Color

Since it was groceries time, we were in a hurry and I could not make the purchase. And this is where I need a little help from you in deciding what to by. I liked the Extra durable lip color. I also wanted to test the actual durability of these.

My Test and Observations
  • To test the lasting power, I did not actually remove those swatches and performed my normal work at home.
  • The lipstick could be easily smudged but the lip color was 'immovable' :). In fact it stayed on even after a bath!
  • The lipstick was a range of pastel colors and  very light shine, almost a matte finish actually, the lip color had a nice shine to it.
  • I came back home to check the shades online, but they looked absolutely different! So in case you're ordering online from Colorbar check out the shade in person first.
My Questions: To buy or not to buy and if to buy then what to buy..
  • Have you used either of these products?
  • What's the experience like?
  • Do they last as long as claimed by the company?
  • Are they moisturizing enough?
Please help me with your thoughts and suggestions!

Colobar I Glide Eye Color, Prunella: Swatches, Review and Photos

Sunday, March 20, 2011
I have read about this range in many blogs and thought of trying it out mysef.

Prunella means 'plum' in Latin and is also a popular first name for women. True to its name, Prunella from the Colorbar I Glide Eye Color range is a very pretty shade of plum. Here's what I like and dislike about it.

 Product Details
  • Price: Rs 325 for 1.1 gm

  • Shade: Prunella 05

  • Range: Colorbar I Glide Eye Color

What I like about Prunella
  • The Color: Very pretty color, has a smooth shine to it. Its more of a plum shade than purple. Also, the color is exactly as it appears on the pencil bottom only with more shine.

  • The Finish: Although it's an eye pencil, it is slightly moist when being applied. But then it quickly dries and gives a smooth liquid liner like finish.

  • The Texture: Its creamy soft, but honestly a little too soft.

  • Very Long Stay: Well it stays on till you clean it off!

  • Super Smudge-proof: Here I have to give this a 5/5! Even if you rub it really hard, it does not smudge! Stays the way you exactly applied it.

  • Easy to Wash off: It is important that the eye color comes of without too much rubbing. This comes off almost completely when I wash my face with a face wash. Easy with the make-up remover too.

What I don't quite like about Prunella
There is just one thing that I don't like about this product, but a serious one!
  • Too Soft and Breaks Easily: It is super soft while applying, one does not need to apply too much pressure while using this. But then it is so soft that it breaks very easily. Almost every time I sharpen it, a bit of the lead breaks. This way it will get over too fast.

Overall Rating: 4/5

Will I Buy it Again?
Honestly, I don't have a definite answer right now. I love everything about Prunella except the fact that it breaks too often. Not sure if I was unlucky with this piece that I got or this is a general problem.
I have time to decide till the pencil gets over..

You can read about more of my eye colors here.
